And now to debunk one of the most common misconceptions about drinking water. Did you know that it can take up to four hours for the water you’ve consumed to actually reach your vocal folds?!

“God’s Plan”: Man, the chords in this loop were hard to identify. Not only because the notes here don’t conform to standard A-440 tuning (it’s all about 20 cents sharp of G major), but because they start out as ninth chords whose upper halves are louder and more timbre-distinct than their lower, arpeggio-happy halves. It’s almost like it’s better explained not as “9-chords,” but as “an Em stacked on top of an Am,” and then “a D chord stacked on a G chord.” This “separation” thinking is enhanced by the low-muffled organ patch playing the Am and G, and the more trebly organ patch playing the Em and D.

The short answer is: I don’t. I grade for effort, in a very coarse-grained way. If the student completes the project, following all the guidelines and requirements, they get full credit, regardless of the quality of the resulting music. (My assignment guidelines are always technical in nature; I don’t put any restrictions on musical style.) If students don’t follow the guidelines and requirements, or hand the assignment in late, or obviously half-ass it, I deduct points accordingly. I don’t give any consideration to the music itself when grading because then I’d just be grading on how closely the student’s musical taste is to mine, which would be arbitrary and unfair.

Radio City Music Hall is such an iconic example of a high-end, large-scale venue that most musicians drool over, but I think I’d have to say that the venue I’d most like to play anywhere is actually Red Rocks in Colorado—it just looks so breathtaking and like a place people really appreciate art and open themselves to the whole experience of the show.

How about F? This one is easy too. The interval between F and C is also a perfect fifth. But this time we’re going down a fifth, not up. So to get down to F, we’re going to divide C’s frequency by 3/2, which gives us 2/3 Hz. We can then bring it up an octave by doubling its frequency, giving us an F at 4/3 Hz.

Music is such a volatile and unpredictable market. You never know when a song will take off or not. Why risk taking a one-time work-for-hire fee for a few hundred dollars when you can have X% ownership? When we apply the Dorian mode to blues music (and by extension, rock ‘n’ roll), we begin to explore some really exciting implications. The Dorian mode and minor pentatonic scales share these common scale degrees: 1  ♭3  4  5  ♭7.

For example, the whole concept of “toplining” may still be foreign to most non-musicians, but if you’re a songwriter who frequents co-writing sessions, there’s no way you haven’t heard of it before. Likewise, the term “scratch vocal” might confuse some, but almost every singer or songwriting producer you meet will know that one intimately.

Also, as our♭II chord types were technically diatonic (aka “regular”) to the Phrygian mode, our non-borrowed-or-secondary weirdo-chords this year were the viis (when it was once a ii/V/♭VI and once diatonic to Lydian) and also a I+ (augmented).
